I’d been looking at doing an online course (or a few!) to boost my learning, as I’d been feeling a bit direction-less lately. As keen as I am to learn, it can be really hard to know what to learn, so I’ve been keeping an eye out for an opportunity to take an organised course.
I’d heard of Code School, but I’d been put off by the price- there are so many sites which offer online courses that it can be really difficult to choose one. They’ve got some promotions on now and one of them caught my eye: a free two-day trial where I could check out as much content as I wanted. If you’re interested click here to try it two days for free– you’ll also be giving me another two days!
I started my trial Monday morning and started on the HTML/CSS path- made up of seven courses. The courses start off with a video to explain a concept, followed by challenges to enforce what you’ve learned. One of the things that set it apart from other online courses was that I wasn’t just copying what was on the screen, I actually had to think about what I was trying to do. I managed to get through the Front-End Foundations course in one day- the majority of it was things that I’d learned before, or at least touched on. The one thing that I hadn’t previously known about was forms. The course did explain it thoroughly, but I wanted a bit more practice, so I was busy on Codepen today practicing making forms, and I created one as part of a contact page for my practice site.
I’m going to try to get through as much as I can of the next course tomorrow, but I really like the teaching style of Code School, and that fact that I can go at my own pace, so I’m pretty tempted to get a subscription for a month so I can finish the path.
I don’t know anyone who’s used Code School before, but if anyone reads this who has, it would be great to hear from you!
