My First [not-so-triumphant!] Foray into Ruby

Judging by the web development communities I’m lucky enough to be a part of, Ruby [mostly on rails, I believe] is one of the hottest languages at the moment. Twitter tells me that as a Ruby developer you can name your salary, and forums and blogs inform me that Ruby is, [dare I say it?] fun.

Despite that, I’m not feeling the love. Not yet, anyway.

Try Ruby, Code School’s intro to Ruby course just didn’t sell me on it, for whatever reason. I can’t put my finger on why, perhaps I’ve just already made my mind up that I prefer JavaScript and am being stubborn about it. I’ve just finished Learn to Program, as part of the Odin Project, and I’ve started to come round to it. At one point though, while struggling to complete an exercise with Ruby, I did it instead with JavaScript, and then “translated” it back to Ruby…

I know that I’ve still got a long way to go in the Odin Project [the tracker at the top tells me I’ve completed 44% of the course…] so I really need to push my preferences to the side if they’re going to be slowing my progress like this. On the up side, I think it’s good that I’ve identified a possible reason why I might be dragging my heels, but the hard part is going to be dealing with it!

Onwards and upwards, eh?

  1. I agree totally, I didn’t like Ruby a ton at first either. Once you get into the actual Ruby chapter (which I am just starting now) you might get to like it more though. I certainly am.
