A few weeks ago I got the news that I was going to be losing my job. A month before Christmas. Fantastic.
I’ve been thinking of leaving kitchen work for a while now, but it’s been hard to get my skills up to a level where I felt comfortable applying for either web development or office jobs.
I did secure an office job though! It’s very exciting- I’m working as accounts receivable/office support for a medium-scale hospitality company. There’s a lot to learn, but it’s all things I’m familiar with in one way or another. The move to a standard Monday-Friday schedule is also really huge for me; I’ve never had a job like that- only a brief time when I was going to college when I couldn’t work at the weekends in addition to college during the week.
All this to say I’m tweaking my current coding goals. Because I’m learning so much at work, and because I need to prioritise that, I’m having a bit of a reshuffle. Instead of coding for an hour each day I’m setting a goal of four to five hours each week.
Moving to my new job will mean that meetups are more accessible to me- both in terms of geography and time, so I hope to attend a few more frequently!
Change is good. And I’m really looking forward to what my new job will bring!
